Coinciding with the start of the 2020/2021 academic year, the Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ announces the opening of Al Khufoos Street with a length of 3700 meters which links between Al Furousiya Street in the west and Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor to the east to serve the areas of Al Murraikh, Al Mehairja and Luaib and facilitates access to many surrounding schools and nearby sport and business facilities.
Al Khufoos Street will improve the traffic movement in the area after its huge development. The street, which consisted of a lane in each direction, has been revamped into a road consisting of three lanes in each direction to accommodate about 10,000 vehicles per hour, which will contribute to reducing travel time to more than 60%.
The importance of the new road is increased by the fact that it intersects with the vital Al Furousiya Street to connect the traffic coming from Al Rayyan and West Doha, passing through Umm Al Jamajim Street, Mehairja Street, Umm Al Tin Street, to Sabah Al Ahmad Corridor and Al Amir Street (Doha Expressway) to connect traffic to Al Sadd east.
The opening of Al Khufous Street will provide a direct traffic movement from Doha Expressway without the need to use the parallel Al Waab Street to reach Mehairja, Murraikh, and Waab reaching directly to al Rayyan and Muaither from the vital roads, as it provides an alternative route to the parallel Al Waab Street, which will reduce traffic pressure.
In the context of enhancing traffic safety pursued by the Public Works Authority, a median has been established separating the two directions of the traffic, in addition to street lighting, smart message systems and road signs. Pedestrian and cycle paths on both sides of the road were completed.
Highway Projects Department Manager Engineer Bader Darwish, confirmed that the opening of Al Khufoos Street at this time coincides with the start of the new school year, especially since there are many educational institutions and schools in the area such as, Al Mujtamaa School for Girls, Omar bin Al-Khattab, Al-Qadisiya Primary School for Boys and Aspire Academy and serves many commercial and sport facilities such as Aspire Zone and Khalifa International Stadium.
