Mesaimeer Pump Station and Outfall Tunnel projects will provide a sustainable solution to discharge surface and storm water.
The total cost of the project is QAR 920 million and it includes the construction of pumping station and a 10-kilometer tunnel, 3.7 meters inner diameter. The pumping station will operate at a capacity of 19.7 cubic meters per second. Its function is to pump water from Mesaimeer Tunnel, a tunnel completed in 2016, to the new outfall tunnel.
The project is designed to ensure the preservation of the marine environment, as the water, which will be pumped complies with the environmental assessment standards, and it is discharged 10 Km offshore to reduce the effect on the marine environment. The project is scheduled to be complete in Q4 2021, with a maintenance and operation period of three years.

Ashghal’s Mesaimeer Tunnel for Surface & Ground Water Drainage
project won the Global Best Project Award, during the Engineering News
Record (ENR) Global Best Projects Awards in New York City on 23 October
2017.
Mesaimeer Tunnel for Surface and Ground Water Drainage Project was
completed in 2016. The project is one of the key projects implemented by
Ashghal as part of its master plan to upgrade Qatar’s drainage network,
the project will collect and discharge the ground and storm water thus
decreasing the surface water levels. This will in turn contribute to the
reduction of pumping costs and to the disposal of groundwater in
construction projects around the country and preserve the foundations of
buildings.
The length of the main tunnel, which runs under the F-Ring Road, is
about 10 kilometers at a depth of about 30 meters below the surface, in
addition to nine sub-tunnels with a total length of about 2 kilometers.
The main tunnel will link the existing and planned drainage networks
in the areas that traverse through, and will collects and discharge
surface water from approximately 170 km² of catchment area.

Completion of the Main Tunnel Excavation Works for Mesaimeer Surface and Ground Water Drainage Project
The Public Works Authority ‘Ashghal’ announced that excavation works for the main tunnel of the Mesaimeer Surface and Ground Water Drainage Project were completed at the end of July 2015.
The project will discharge the ground water and stormwater into the sea thus decreasing the surface water level. This will in turn contribute to the reduction of pumping costs and to the disposal of ground water in construction projects around the country.
The excavation works were carried out by “Al Thumama” and “Al Rawada” Tunnel Boring Machines (TBM). Named after the areas they operated in, the two TBMs were specially designed and developed for this project by the German manufacturing company “Herrenknecht AG”, and were used for the first time in Qatar to excavate deep tunnels.
It is worth mentioning that the main tunnel is approximately 10 km long and reaches a depth of approximately 30 m.
